learning to pause: practices for relaxing into the present moment

Arriving

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2
10:00-11:00 AM ET

The breath is the metronome of NOW.

Once we feel supported and safe, we have the capacity to move out of Fight, Flight, or Freeze, which, by design, has locked us into survival mode. In survival mode, we have no access to our higher-order thinking and can only react in the familiar, ingrained ways we have developed, as individuals and as a species. The feeling of being safe gives our body permission to turn off that fear response that is often ongoing (and even more often unwarranted). Then we can begin to shift our nervous system response from Fight/Flight to Rest/Repair.

In this class, we will focus on the breath to help us ARRIVE in the present moment. In the present, we are typically not in mortal danger, even though our body is reacting as if we are. The breath is the tool we use to, one inhale and exhale at a time, to rhythmically calm down the amygdala/fear circuitry. Once the body understands that we are not in danger, we can use our breath to widen our awareness beyond the zoom lens of fear and threat. Breath by breath, this can change our lives.

ABOUT THE SERIES

For many of us, our nervous system has been firing up our stress response so continuously that high alert now feels β€œnormal.”  And for the past several years, this state of stress is more heightened and widespread than I’ve seen in all my 30 years of teaching.

Pausing is the medicine for these times.

Pausing is a conscious relaxation practice. A way of disrupting our habitual reactions, making it possible for us to create new ways of responding to the moment and expanding our behavior options. This is an essential and urgent skill in these uncertain and challenging times.

In this 6-class series, I’ll guide you progressively through LARLARβ„’, the 6-step method I created to help you practice Pausing, a practice of conscious relaxation and returning to a place of calm. You’ll learn to kindfully meet your tension, create a sense of spaciousness, and open the path for a deeper connection in your body, mind, and heart.

Each class will weave together the latest science on the stress response and relaxation response, as well as simple, short, repeatable mindfulness exercises that help reduce stress and tension and cultivate somatic awareness and deep listening.

Plus, pair each practice with my FREE Friday Deep Listening Meditations at 9:30am ET.
