learning to pause: practices for relaxing into the present moment

Relaxing

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9
10:00-11:00 AM ET

In the present moment, we can reconnect to ourselves enough to actually relax. When we are relaxed, we can become curious about and compassionate toward ourselves and others. Neurologically, the state of relaxation is the opposite of defensiveness. This may seem obvious, but when you think about it as a physiological condition of the body, it becomes clear that the ability to be relaxed is a skill we must learn and cultivate. Relaxation can mean dropping our shoulders; it can also describe the way we attend to ourselves when we realize our shoulders are lifted.

In this class we will explore “letting be” and how that affects the nervous system and our ability to respond to people and situations with wisdom and compassion. This ability to reconnect with ourselves not only lays the groundwork for connecting with others, it creates the kind of spaciousness within us that we need to actually “be” with another in a challenging situation. In this practice, we notice the places we are gripping and clenching and holding — the jaw, the shoulders, the fists, the belly.

ABOUT THE SERIES

For many of us, our nervous system has been firing up our stress response so continuously that high alert now feels “normal.”  And for the past several years, this state of stress is more heightened and widespread than I’ve seen in all my 30 years of teaching.

Pausing is the medicine for these times.

Pausing is a conscious relaxation practice. A way of disrupting our habitual reactions, making it possible for us to create new ways of responding to the moment and expanding our behavior options. This is an essential and urgent skill in these uncertain and challenging times.

In this 6-class series, I’ll guide you progressively through LARLAR™, the 6-step method I created to help you practice Pausing, a practice of conscious relaxation and returning to a place of calm. You’ll learn to kindfully meet your tension, create a sense of spaciousness, and open the path for a deeper connection in your body, mind, and heart.

Each class will weave together the latest science on the stress response and relaxation response, as well as simple, short, repeatable mindfulness exercises that help reduce stress and tension and cultivate somatic awareness and deep listening.

Plus, pair each practice with my FREE Friday Deep Listening Meditations at 9:30am ET.
